Passage

The Great Barrier Reef, stretching over 2,300 kilometres along the northeastern coast of Australia, is the world's largest coral reef system. Comprising over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, it is visible from outer space and has been called the "rainforest of the sea" due to its extraordinary biodiversity.

Despite its protected status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the reef faces unprecedented threats. Ocean temperatures have risen by approximately 1°C since the pre-industrial era, and projections suggest a further increase of 1.5-2°C by 2100. This warming directly triggers coral bleaching events, wherein corals expel their symbiotic algae, turning white and becoming vulnerable to disease and death.

Recent research published in Nature Climate Change indicates that mass bleaching events, once rare, now occur approximately every six years—a frequency too rapid for reef ecosystems to fully recover between events. The 2016 and 2017 bleaching events were the most severe on record, killing approximately 50% of the shallow-water corals in the northern sections of the reef.

Marine biologists are divided, however, on the reef's long-term prognosis. Some advocate for immediate intervention through assisted evolution—selectively breeding heat-resistant coral strains in laboratory conditions before transplanting them onto degraded sections of the reef. Critics argue that this approach, while innovative, cannot be scaled to cover the reef's vast area, and that addressing the root cause—greenhouse gas emissions—remains the only viable long-term solution.

1.According to the passage, how long is the Great Barrier Reef?

2.What has caused the coral bleaching events described in the passage?

3.Mass bleaching events now occur approximately every six years.

4.Critics and supporters of assisted evolution agree that greenhouse gases are not the primary concern.

5.In what year was the Great Barrier Reef designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site? (Write the year only)
